Life, Liberty, and the Firearms that protect them both

Just Give Them What They Want

Patrick of Where Angels Fear To Tread discusses a most unfortunate example of this strategy in action:
Give Them What They Want, Even Your Life.

Kansas City police on Friday continued to look for two armed robbers who fatally shot a store employee Thursday afternoon even though the victim didn’t appear to offer any resistance.

There are two lessons here:

1. The capacity for armed resistance improves your chances of survival, by quite a lot.

2. There is no such thing as a social contract with evil.

If you’re only going to look at one of these links, make it that last one which goes to Volk’s excellent essay.  A taste:

Those who say that it’s not worth risking your life to resist a mugging are assuming rational self-interest on the part of the muggers and, as a result of that self-interest, an implied social contract between criminals and their victims. The supposed contract requires turning over money and valuables in exchange for safety from harm. As the occasional case of torture and murder illustrates, that social contract is an illusion.
